What creatine does, and why the form matters

Creatine is a compound your body already makes and stores mostly in muscle, where it helps rapidly regenerate ATP, the energy currency for short, hard efforts. Creatine monohydrate: the benchmark

Monohydrate is creatine bound to a single water molecule. It is the form used in the overwhelming majority of published studies, it is roughly 88% creatine by weight, and it is cheap to produce well. A standard approach is 3–5g per day, every day, with no strict timing required. You can do a short loading phase (around 20g/day split into four doses for 5–7 days) to saturate faster, but it is optional; a flat 3–5g daily reaches the same saturation in about three to four weeks. A controlled trial comparing buffered creatine to ordinary monohydrate found no advantage in muscle creatine content, body composition, or performance, at either equal or lower doses. Creatine ethyl ester has fared worse: research suggests it actually breaks down to creatinine more readily and raised muscle creatine less effectively than monohydrate. Neither form has earned its price premium against the benchmark.

Liquid and "micronised" creatine

Two different things often get confused here. Liquid creatine (pre-dissolved) is a genuinely weak option, because creatine is not stable sitting in water for long; it degrades to creatinine over time, so you may be paying for a product that has already lost potency. Micronised creatine is just monohydrate ground into finer particles for better mixability. It is still monohydrate, still the proven form, and a reasonable choice if you dislike grittiness; it simply mixes more smoothly, not works better.

The thing that matters more than form: dose accuracy

Here is the part the form debate distracts from. Independent testing programmes around the world have repeatedly found supplements, creatine products included, that fall short of their label claims.
