How much is used in studies?
Two common approaches are a modest daily amount from the start, or a brief loading phase followed by that daily amount. Loading changes how quickly stores rise; it is not a requirement for every user.

A foundational study found that 3 g per day over 28 days increased muscle creatine more gradually than 20 g per day over six days, reaching a similar increase in stores. Its participants were men and its principal outcome was muscle creatine concentration, so do not turn it into a guaranteed performance timeline. Hultman et al., 1996[4]
For many shoppers, the simpler question is whether there is any reason to hurry. If there is no event-specific plan supervised by a sports professional, a loading phase may add complexity without solving a meaningful problem.
Daily habits, rest days and missed doses
Creatine research concerns maintaining muscle stores over time. A routine that includes rest days is easier to follow than guessing whether a workout was “hard enough” to count. Choose a repeatable point in the day that fits the product directions, such as alongside an ordinary meal, and measure the powder accurately.
If you forget a dose, avoid inventing a large catch-up amount. Resume your normal plan and ask a pharmacist or sports dietitian if you are unsure. A practical choice is the time you will reliably remember and tolerate. You do not need to miss a planned meal or carry powder into the gym solely to hit an advertised minute-by-minute window.
What should you expect from the scales?

If weight is relevant to a competition category or to your clinical monitoring, discuss timing before starting. Record when the supplement began, so that a change in body weight is interpreted in context.
For ordinary gym use, keep training records as well as body weight if those records are helpful to you. Note the exercise, technique standard, load, repetitions and rest periods. Comparing a rushed set with a well-rested set does not provide a clean measure of a supplement's effect.
Do not deliberately change your training, sleep schedule, food intake and five supplements at once if your aim is to assess which change was useful. Real life will never be a laboratory, but a clear record makes the decision to continue or stop more informed.
Common concern: kidneys and blood tests
Evidence in healthy adults is reassuring within studied protocols, but that does not establish suitability for every medical situation. In a 12-week randomised trial of resistance-trained adults eating a higher-protein diet, creatine did not worsen kidney function measured using a direct filtration method. Tell the clinician ordering blood tests that you use creatine. Creatine and creatinine are related but different substances, and creatinine-based estimates need context. Bring the product name, full ingredients, daily amount and duration of use. A photograph of the label is often more useful than saying you take “one scoop”, particularly when scoops differ between products.
Common concern: hair loss
A 2025 randomised trial directly assessed hair-related measures after 12 weeks of 5 g daily creatine in resistance-trained men. It found no significant group differences in those outcomes or DHT. Thirty-eight participants completed the study. Lak et al., 2025[7]
That is more relevant than assuming a hormone result automatically predicts hair loss. It still cannot prove zero risk for every person over years of use; the study was limited in size, duration and population, and some authors disclosed supplement-industry relationships. If you notice hair loss, seek an assessment instead of relying on a shop article to determine the cause.
Common concern: stomach discomfort

First check what you actually took. Was it plain creatine, or a blend containing caffeine, sweeteners and several other ingredients? Was the scoop measured? Had the same ingredient already appeared in another product that day?
Do not keep increasing the amount to chase an effect. If symptoms persist, stop experimenting and discuss them with a health professional. Severe symptoms or feeling acutely unwell require medical advice rather than a different flavour.
Is creatine useful for women or older adults?
Creatine is not an ingredient reserved for men. Trials have included women and older adults, although evidence volume, health status and training protocols vary.
In a 24-week trial in vulnerable older women, creatine with resistance training improved some strength and appendicular lean-mass outcomes. Results were not superior for every outcome; for example, the leg-press comparison with training plus placebo was not statistically significant. The study does not justify calling creatine a treatment for ageing, frailty or bone disease. Gualano et al., 2014[8]
The practical implication is to individualise the decision. An older adult may first need help with a safe exercise plan, appetite or a medical issue. A younger adult training consistently may have a different priority. Age or sex alone does not answer whether a supplement is needed.
What about brain health?
Cognition is an active research area, but exercise evidence should not be borrowed to guarantee a brain benefit. A 2024 crossover study in 15 healthy adults examined a high single dose (0.35 g/kg) during 21 hours of sleep deprivation. That unusual dose and setting do not establish that routine sports doses make well-rested adults think better, or that creatine treats a neurological condition. Gordji-Nejad et al., 2024[9]
If tiredness, poor concentration or memory changes are the main reason you are shopping, address those concerns with a clinician. Avoid using a supplement as a way to postpone an assessment or repeatedly compensate for inadequate sleep.
Which form should you compare?
Creatine monohydrate is the reference form behind the strongest body of practical sports evidence. A higher price, more complicated chemical name or promise of “advanced absorption” is not enough to establish a better result. Ask for a direct comparison relevant to the claimed advantage. - Grams of creatine monohydrate in the amount you will take.
- Other active ingredients and their disclosed amounts.
- Number of usable portions in the pack.
- Price including delivery.
- Allergen and preparation information.
- Evidence behind any testing or certification claim.

Frequently asked questions
Is creatine the same as protein?
No. They perform different nutritional roles. A creatine portion does not count as a serving of dietary protein, and a protein drink does not necessarily contain creatine.
Do I have to load?
No. A modest daily approach raises stores more gradually. Loading is one protocol with trade-offs, not a prerequisite for use.
Should I take it on rest days?
Common daily protocols include rest days because the aim is maintaining stores. Follow the plan agreed for you and the product directions.
Is more better?

There is no universal clearance. The evidence used for this guide does not establish that creatine prevents GLP-1-related lean-tissue loss, and absence of a listed direct interaction does not prove that the combination suits an individual.
Ask the prescriber or pharmacist to review kidney health, hydration, current gastrointestinal symptoms, diabetes treatment, other medicines and the exact creatine product. Do not start creatine while vomiting, having significant diarrhoea or struggling to maintain fluid intake without clinical advice.
