The short answer
Choose a pre-workout by its disclosed ingredients, your total caffeine intake and the time you train. Decide first what you want it to do. Feeling stimulated, consuming fluid, supplying exercise fuel and taking a particular researched ingredient are different jobs. A product with more ingredients does not automatically do any of them better.

This guide is for adults comparing products. If you have a heart condition, relevant medicines, anxiety symptoms, pregnancy or another health concern, obtain individual advice before using a stimulant formula. Adult sports studies are not a reason to give pre-workout to children.
Start with your actual session
Write down the time, length and nature of your typical workout. Then write down what usually gets in the way. If the problem is no time for lunch, a highly stimulating drink is unlikely to resolve the food-planning problem. If you train at 8 pm and sleep poorly, increasing caffeine deserves particular scrutiny.

Count caffeine before comparing flavours
FSANZ's consumer guidance lists a maximum of 200 mg in a single serving and 400 mg per day from all sources for adults, with 200 mg per day for pregnancy and breastfeeding. These are general guidance limits, not targets or guarantees that an individual will tolerate that amount. FSANZ caffeine guidance[2]
Research papers often report caffeine in milligrams per kilogram. Do not convert a sports-research range directly into an instruction to exceed public guidance or the label. Study participants, screening, monitoring and outcomes are different from an unsupervised purchase.
Include coffee, tea, energy drinks, caffeinated gels, tablets and other supplements. Caffeine amounts in coffee can vary, so a guessed “one coffee” may not be a precise number. Use disclosed amounts where available and recognise uncertainty where they are not.

Those amounts are invented. They show how a serving that looks modest in isolation can take the day close to a general limit. Being below a limit does not answer whether the timing suits your sleep or whether the formula suits your health.
If the product does not disclose total caffeine clearly, ask the seller. Guarana and other caffeine-containing ingredients should be part of that answer. A list of several stimulant names without usable amounts makes comparison difficult.
Protect sleep when you train late
Being able to fall asleep does not prove caffeine had no effect on sleep. In a randomised crossover study of 23 men, 400 mg affected sleep when taken within 12 hours of bedtime, and participants did not reliably perceive all the changes. The 100 mg condition did not show the same effects in that sample. This does not establish a universal safe cut-off for everyone. Dose and timing trial[3]
Use your normal bedtime when assessing a product, not only the start of the workout. For late training, consider keeping the routine free of caffeine and review how you feel over several nights. A pre-workout is optional; “stimulant-free” is a category to assess, not a requirement to replace one purchase with another.

What do the other ingredients mean?
The presence of an ingredient tells you very little without its amount, chemical form and intended use. The following distinctions help prevent common mistakes.
Beta-alanine: tingling is not a performance test
Beta-alanine research generally involves repeated daily use over weeks to increase muscle carnosine. It can cause temporary tingling, especially with larger single amounts. Check whether the product is meant to be used only on workout days and whether that matches the ingredient rationale. Do not increase a caffeinated pre-workout merely to obtain more beta-alanine; that also increases its other ingredients.
Citrulline: distinguish the form and the outcome
L-citrulline and citrulline malate are not identical label descriptions. If a formula lists a blend or a ratio, establish how much of the relevant ingredient it provides before comparing with research.
Results also depend on the test. A small recovery trial in untrained men did not find the claimed recovery benefit, while a recent pilot in trained adults found a small, exercise-specific effect at a higher citrulline-malate dose. Feeling a pump, completing more repetitions and gaining muscle over months are different outcomes. Ask which one a product claim refers to and whether the evidence actually measured it.
Creatine: check the daily total

Electrolytes and carbohydrate: separate hydration from fuel
A blend containing a little sodium is not automatically an appropriate hydration plan. A sugar-free drink may contain electrolytes but little exercise fuel. If these are the main jobs you need, assess them directly using the training hydration guide.
Read the entire serving panel
Check whether one serving is one scoop, two scoops or a gram amount. Then calculate what your intended portion actually provides. A front label may display the largest recommended serving, while you intend to use less.

Neither is automatically the better choice. The figures do not tell you the complete formula, individual tolerance or whether a supplement is useful. If you use half a serving, every listed ingredient is reduced; you cannot assume only caffeine changes.
Use the actual label and measuring instructions. Avoid measuring a new product with an old scoop. Never dry-scoop powder, and do not use pure or highly concentrated caffeine powders. How to assess a product without chasing sensations
Decide what would make continued use worthwhile before you begin. An example might be whether a measured, appropriate product fits a morning routine without disturbing sleep or digestion. Record the amount, time, training and any unwanted effects.
Keep your ordinary routine reasonably stable while assessing one change. If you also start a new programme, change food intake and add three products, you will have little basis for attributing the result.
Do not keep increasing the portion because the first sensation becomes familiar. That may increase side effects and complicate the daily caffeine total. A product that makes you feel unwell has failed an important part of the practical assessment regardless of its marketing.

Shopping in New Zealand
Ask for current, readable labels, clear seller contact details and a transparent explanation of any testing claim. A batch test should identify the batch and what was tested; a general brand statement does not answer every quality question.

Do I need pre-workout to train effectively?
No. It is optional. A programme, ordinary food, fluid and recovery are the starting point; an added product should have a clear purpose.
Is a stimulant-free product automatically suitable for everyone?
No. It can still contain active ingredients and allergens. Read the full label and consider your health and medicines.
Is tingling proof that pre-workout is working?
No. Beta-alanine can cause tingling, but that sensation does not measure the product's effect on training outcomes. Unusual or severe symptoms need assessment.
Can I combine coffee with pre-workout?
Count the total caffeine and consider timing and health suitability before combining sources. Do not treat them as independent allowances.
Can I halve a serving?
Use the product's instructions and measuring method. A smaller portion changes all ingredient amounts, and it does not resolve uncertainty about an undisclosed blend.
How long before training should I take it?
Follow the instructions for the actual product. There is no universal timing rule for every combination of ingredients, food intake and individual response.
