The short answer

New Zealand's low-selenium soils do not prove that you are deficient. Medsafe reports[1] that animal-feed practices and imported foods such as wheat and legumes help most New Zealanders reach around recommended intake. New Zealand dietary supplements must not recommend more than 150 micrograms of selenium per adult daily dose[2], and selenium has a relatively narrow margin between adequacy and excess.

Selenium supports selenoproteins involved in antioxidant defence, thyroid-hormone metabolism and other functions. Those biological roles do not show that extra selenium prevents cancer, heart disease, thyroid disease or fatigue in a person whose intake is already adequate.

What low soil selenium actually means

The selenium concentration of plant foods reflects soil and growing conditions. New Zealand's low levels were first a prominent agricultural issue because grazing animals could be affected. Livestock and poultry feed practices now influence the selenium content of meat, eggs and milk. Imported wheat, legumes and other foods also diversify the human food supply.

Medsafe's specific New Zealand review found no indication that the soil pattern had caused widespread detrimental effects in people. That review was published in 2000 and relied on older surveys, so it should not be treated as a current measurement of every population group. Its enduring value is the distinction between low soil and individual deficiency.

How much is the reference intake?

The Australia and New Zealand Nutrient Reference Values[3] list adult RDIs of 70 micrograms per day for men and 60 micrograms per day for women, with life-stage values for pregnancy and lactation. These are totals from food and supplements for generally healthy populations.

Three different numbers must not be confused:

  • RDI: an intake expected to meet the needs of nearly all healthy people in a group.
  • 150-microgram daily product limit: the maximum recommended adult daily dose for a New Zealand dietary supplement under the Dietary Supplements Regulations.
  • Upper level: the highest long-term total intake considered unlikely to cause adverse effects for most people; the currently published adult NRV is 400 micrograms per day.

The product limit and upper level are ceilings, not goals. A 150-microgram tablet can be more than twice the female adult RDI before food is counted.

Read the label as a daily total

Selenium may appear in a stand-alone tablet, multivitamin, “antioxidant,” thyroid, fertility or hair/nail formula. Compare the recommended daily dose, not only one capsule.

One milligram equals 1,000 micrograms. A decimal error can therefore be large. Do not divide a tablet or use a veterinary/agricultural preparation to improvise a human dose.

Different chemical forms have different metabolism, but the form name does not make total dose unimportant. No form turns a high intake into a safe one.

Brazil nuts are not measuring spoons

Brazil nuts are often promoted as a precise daily selenium “dose.” Their concentration varies markedly with soil and origin, which means one nut cannot be assumed to provide a fixed amount. Regularly eating several alongside a selenium supplement can make intake unexpectedly high.

Use nuts as food in a varied pattern rather than a laboratory-calibrated tablet. If you need a defined clinical dose, use a product and plan chosen with a health professional.

What excess selenium can look like

Long-term excessive intake can cause selenosis. Medsafe lists garlic-like breath odour, fatigue, gastrointestinal symptoms, nail changes, hair loss and peripheral nerve symptoms. Acute large exposures can be more serious.

These signs are non-specific; hair loss or tiredness does not diagnose selenium excess. If you suspect excessive intake, stop combining products and contact the National Poisons Centre or a clinician as appropriate. Keep the packaging so the actual compound and dose can be identified.

When testing or supplementation may be clinical

Selenium deficiency in well-nourished people is uncommon. Status can become relevant in severe malabsorption, prolonged parenteral nutrition, dialysis and some rare conditions. These cases require interpretation of health history, diet and laboratory measures. Serum selenium alone does not establish that a retail supplement will improve a symptom.

Pregnancy is also a poor setting for internet self-dosing. The RDI changes, but Health NZ does not recommend a blanket stand-alone selenium programme comparable with its specific folic-acid and iodine advice. Show prenatal and other labels to your maternity professional.

What evidence does not support

Randomised-trial evidence does not justify marketing selenium to prevent cancer or cardiovascular disease in the general population. Thyroid biology is similarly easy to overstate: selenium participates in thyroid-hormone metabolism, but that fact is not evidence that supplements “support” or treat every thyroid concern.

Be cautious of disease-treatment promises based only on selenium's biological role. A study about a nutrient does not establish that a particular product will treat your condition.

Frequently asked questions

Does everyone living in New Zealand need selenium?

No. Soil is one input into the food system. Medsafe notes that animal supplementation and imported foods help provide selenium, and widespread deficiency has not been established.

Is 150 micrograms the recommended intake?
