The short answer
Zinc deficiency can lower testosterone, but extra zinc has not been shown to reliably “boost” testosterone in zinc-replete people. A 2023 systematic review[3] found that baseline zinc/testosterone status, dose, form and duration changed results; only eight of its 38 included studies were clinical. If you have symptoms of low testosterone, use a clinician-led assessment; a zinc product cannot diagnose the cause, and one hormone result needs timing and clinical context.

What the evidence actually contains
A 2023 systematic review located 38 zinc/testosterone studies, but only eight were clinical studies; the rest were animal studies. It concluded effects varied with baseline zinc/testosterone, dose, form and duration. That is a signal about deficiency and context, not proof that a store product raises testosterone in healthy men.
A separate systematic review of commercial “testosterone booster” ingredients found most ingredients failed to increase total testosterone consistently. Whole multi-ingredient products often lacked direct randomised evidence. Results from one zinc salt or deficient population cannot be assigned to a branded blend.
Serum zinc is also an imperfect stand-alone marker and changes with infection, inflammation, fasting and time of day. A clinician interprets diet, symptoms and other tests together.
How much zinc is in the reference values?
Australia and New Zealand adult RDIs[1] are 14 mg/day for men and 8 mg/day for women, with separate pregnancy/lactation values. The adult upper level is 40 mg/day from all sources. The RDI is not a performance dose, and the upper level is not a target.
Plant-heavy diets can have lower zinc bioavailability because phytate binds zinc. Soaking, sprouting, fermenting and leavening can reduce phytate, while regular legumes, tofu, nuts, seeds and wholegrains build intake.

Read elemental zinc and the full daily serving
Products use zinc gluconate, citrate, picolinate, sulfate and other salts. Compare elemental zinc, not the compound weight. A label should state something like “zinc 15 mg (from zinc citrate).” A premium salt name does not establish a testosterone outcome.
Add zinc from multivitamins, ZMA products, cold lozenges and testosterone blends. A 25 mg stand-alone tablet plus a 15 mg multivitamin reaches the adult UL before food.
Copper, medicines and adverse effects
High zinc intake over weeks or months can reduce copper absorption, contributing to anaemia and neurological problems. Nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and headache can occur at high doses. Very large acute exposures require poisons/clinical advice.
Zinc can reduce absorption of tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics and penicillamine. The required timing depends on the medicine, so ask a pharmacist rather than using a generic “two-hour rule.”
Products marketed for colds often deliver zinc differently and answer a disease-treatment question; they should not be repurposed as daily hormone supplements.
How testosterone should be assessed
Testosterone varies across the day and with acute illness, sleep, energy availability and some medicines. Clinical diagnosis generally requires compatible symptoms and appropriately timed repeat blood testing. Depending on results, clinicians may assess sex hormone-binding globulin, LH/FSH, prolactin, thyroid function and other causes.
Do not delay assessment of testicular changes, infertility, severe headache/vision symptoms, loss of body hair or major sexual dysfunction while trialling supplements.
Frequently asked questions
Can zinc raise testosterone if I am deficient?
Correcting deficiency may normalise disrupted physiology, but the response and treatment depend on the cause. This does not imply above-adequate zinc produces above-normal testosterone.
Is ZMA better than zinc alone?
ZMA combines zinc, magnesium and vitamin B6. The combination does not have convincing evidence as a testosterone or muscle-building product in nutrient-replete athletes. It also makes duplicate doses easier.
Which zinc form absorbs best?
Differences exist, but product dose, food timing, tolerance and need matter. No common form has proven a universal testosterone advantage.
Can women take zinc?
Women need zinc too, but adult reference intake is lower and hormone marketing is irrelevant to adequacy. Pregnancy and breastfeeding have separate values.
How long can I take 40 mg?
Forty milligrams is the adult upper level, not a routine dose. Long-term use near the UL needs review because food adds more and copper status can be affected.
