The short answer

Citrulline malate may improve some exercise outcomes in some settings, but findings are mixed and a larger number on a label does not establish a better workout. Check whether the product contains L-citrulline or citrulline malate, how much is declared and whether any ratio is clearly defined.

It is an optional ingredient to assess within a training plan. A noticeable sensation, a bigger pump or an elaborate formula name is not proof of long-term muscle gain.

L-citrulline and citrulline malate are different label entries

L-citrulline names the amino acid. Citrulline malate includes citrulline with malate, so the total compound or mixture weight does not automatically equal the L-citrulline amount. Manufacturers may describe a ratio, but the basis and actual formulation should be clear.

That difference matters when comparing research and products. A study using 8 g L-citrulline is not the same exposure as a label listing 8 g citrulline malate. Neither can be inferred from an undisclosed “pump matrix”.

Missing information should remain a question for the supplier. Do not replace it with the most favourable assumption.

A ratio calculation with an explicit assumption

If a fictional product contains 6 g of a mixture confirmed to be two parts citrulline to one part malate by mass, the calculated citrulline share is 6 × 2 ÷ 3 = 4 g. A 1:1 mixture by mass would instead provide 3 g citrulline in 6 g total mixture.

This is arithmetic, not laboratory verification. It applies only if the manufacturer confirms that interpretation and the declared composition is accurate. Do not assume every commercial “2:1” label provides independently tested active content.

The same caution applies to ingredient purity and branded raw materials. A trademark or purity percentage needs its own supporting documentation; it should not be inferred from the product name.

What positive studies have found

A crossover trial in 41 men reported improved repetitions in a demanding bench-press protocol and reduced reported soreness after citrulline malate compared with placebo. Some participants reported stomach discomfort. The result concerns that specific session design and cannot be turned into a universal percentage improvement for normal gym sessions. Pérez-Guisado and Jakeman, 2010[1]

A more recent small pilot compared different amounts of citrulline malate and placebo in trained participants. Its limited sample and exercise-specific findings do not establish that the highest amount is best for everyone. Dose-comparison pilot, 2026[2]

These studies justify research interest. They do not verify an unrelated blended pre-workout or remove the need to consider tolerance and cost.

What studies have not found

An acute trial in 18 resistance-trained men and women found no improvement in the tested force, bench-press endurance or muscle-oxygenation outcomes after L-citrulline. It examined a different form and protocol from the positive bench-press study. L-citrulline trial, 2023[3]

A separate citrulline-malate study using a high-volume exercise protocol found no improvement in repetitions or measured force. Reported soreness over the following 72 hours was actually higher with citrulline malate than placebo. This was one specific protocol, not evidence that every user will experience greater soreness. German Volume Training study[4]

The fair interpretation is mixed evidence. Differences in exercise, dose, participants and formulation may matter, but they should not be used to explain away every null result while treating every positive result as universal.

Does a pump demonstrate better results?

A subjective pump, a blood-flow-related measurement, extra repetitions in one session and muscle growth over months are different outcomes. Ask which one the evidence actually measured.

If you enjoy a product's taste or the way a session feels, that can be a personal preference. Keep it separate from a claim that the product produces superior long-term adaptation. A useful training record should capture exercise, load, repetitions and recovery context rather than only how pumped you felt.

What happens when caffeine is included?

If a pre-workout combines citrulline with caffeine, a better session cannot automatically be attributed to citrulline. The full mixture needs its own interpretation.

In a crossover study comparing caffeine, citrulline malate, their combination and placebo, adding citrulline malate did not improve the tested outcomes beyond caffeine alone. The isolated citrulline-malate condition also did not show an ergogenic effect in that protocol. Combined-ingredient trial, 2023[5]

Why a research dose is not a shopping instruction

The studies above tested specific forms and amounts under controlled conditions. They do not establish a single mandatory daily or pre-session dose for all adults. More powder can increase expense and make tolerance worse without improving the relevant outcome.

Follow appropriate product directions and assess suitability before use. If a formula contains too little declared information to compare with evidence, it is reasonable to choose a more transparent option or make no purchase.

Speak with a pharmacist or clinician when taking medicines or living with a cardiovascular, kidney or other relevant condition. Do not use a pre-workout article to self-manage blood pressure or another medical issue.

Compare costs at the amount you would actually use

Suppose a fictional product costs NZ$60 for 30 servings, each declaring 6 g citrulline malate. It costs NZ$2 per labelled serving. A second product costing NZ$75 for 25 servings costs NZ$3 per serving, but you still need the form, ratio and other ingredients to make a useful comparison.

Price per gram of the whole blend can be misleading when active content is unclear. Equally, the lowest price per active gram does not establish that the ingredient is worthwhile for your goal.

Include how often you would use it and whether the formula fits your training time. A caffeinated product that you can use only on occasional morning sessions may not justify a large tub.

What to request from the manufacturer

Ask for the current flavour-specific label, separate ingredient amounts, ratio definition and any relevant verification of the raw material. Check whether the retailer's selected serving and product image match.

Questions people ask

Is 8 g citrulline malate the same as 8 g L-citrulline?

No. The malate-containing amount includes another component. Check the declared composition and ratio basis.

Is a 2:1 ratio always better than 1:1?

A ratio describes composition under its stated definition. It does not by itself prove superior performance or tolerance.

Can I add citrulline to my pre-workout?

First check whether it already contains citrulline and whether amounts are disclosed. Assess the combined formula and individual suitability rather than automatically increasing it.

Does citrulline build muscle?

The studies discussed mainly test acute exercise outcomes. They do not establish a guaranteed long-term muscle-gain effect for a retail product.

What if I do not feel anything?

Sensation is not a reliable dose guide. Do not increase servings simply to create a stronger feeling. Decide whether the ingredient has a clear role in your programme.
