The short answer
Whey and collagen are different protein sources, so equal grams on a label do not make them interchangeable. If your main aim is to add a suitable protein source to support a resistance-training diet, whey or an appropriate plant alternative is a more direct starting point than collagen alone. First decide what you mean by “better”
Better for adding protein to breakfast is not necessarily the same question as better texture in coffee, better value, or evidence for a particular connective-tissue outcome. Write the intended use down before comparing labels.

A claim about one purpose cannot answer the others. A product that stirs easily into a drink has demonstrated convenience, not clinical benefit.
Why the amino acid difference matters
Whey is a milk protein supplying the essential amino acids. Collagen has a different amino acid pattern and is not an equivalent complete protein source. That difference is particularly relevant when a powder replaces other protein-rich foods rather than adding variety to an already adequate diet.
In a controlled study of 31 older men, additional whey and pea protein increased integrated muscle protein synthesis over the study period, whereas collagen did not. Do not read that as a requirement to take the large supplemental amount used in the experiment. Study doses answer study questions; your food gap may be much smaller or nonexistent.
Does collagen automatically target tendons or joints?
The fact that collagen exists in connective tissue does not prove that a collagen supplement will repair an injury. You need evidence for the specific outcome, formulation, population and accompanying activity or rehabilitation.
Research can also contradict an appealing story. In a trial involving recreational athletes, collagen ingestion after exercise did not increase the measured muscle connective protein synthesis response. That uncertainty is a reason to keep a sore knee or persistent tendon problem in a clinical and rehabilitation conversation. A retailer comparison cannot diagnose the problem, select treatment or promise that a supplement will prevent recurrence.

How to interpret a whey–collagen blend
A blend can contain useful dietary protein, but its total grams do not disclose how much comes from each source. Ask for the ingredient list, proportions where declared, and a manufacturer amino acid profile if one is available.
For example, the supplied Chocolate Milkshake label for Inception Labs Collagen Whey declares 25.8 g protein in 33 g powder. Its blend description lists whey concentrate at 60% and bovine collagen at 40%. Those are ingredient proportions; they do not independently establish each source's share of the final protein or leucine. Supplied product label[3]
You therefore cannot calculate verified whey-derived protein by multiplying 25.8 by 0.60. The protein content of the ingredients and formulation details would be needed. Equally, you should not assume that a study using a different whey–collagen ratio verifies this product.

A blend study is not a licence to generalise
Researchers have tested different whey and collagen combinations, but the comparator is crucial. A blend outperforming a non-protein placebo does not establish that adding collagen improves on the same amount of whey. A higher-protein blend also cannot isolate the effect of collagen if the comparison contains less total protein.
When reading a headline, check whether groups were matched for total protein and energy, whether outcomes were directly measured, how long the study lasted and whether the tested product resembles the one being sold. These questions are often more informative than the words “clinically studied”.

Milk allergy and lactose intolerance are different decisions
A whey–collagen blend remains milk containing when whey is included. Collagen does not cancel an allergen. The supplied blend label above declares milk and precautionary wording for other allergens; check the current package rather than relying on a category description.

If milk is unsuitable, compare appropriate non-milk complete protein options rather than assuming pure collagen is the only alternative. Persistent or severe symptoms deserve assessment rather than repeated self-testing with increasingly expensive powders.
Compare cost without hiding the differences
For an ordinary price comparison, calculate cost per usable serving and check the declared protein amount. Keep amino acid quality as a separate consideration; a price-per-protein calculation cannot measure every nutritional difference.
Suppose two fictional products both cost NZ$70. One provides 30 servings and the other 20. Their costs are about NZ$2.33 and NZ$3.50 per labelled serving. Before choosing the cheaper one, check serving size, protein source, protein grams, dietary suitability and whether that serving fits your intended use.
The same logic applies to a “double protein” scoop. A larger scoop may simply use the tub faster. Use scales or the manufacturer's stated measure where appropriate, and do not assume all scoops have the same weight.
Make the decision fit your meals
If breakfast is the gap, compare the powder with breakfast foods you would actually eat. If the powder is only going into coffee, ask what the rest of breakfast supplies. If you already eat adequate protein-rich meals, first explain what an additional product would change.
