The short answer
Whey and suitably chosen plant proteins can both help meet everyday protein needs. Collagen has a different amino-acid profile and should not be treated as an equivalent sole protein source for a muscle-focused eating plan. The most useful choice depends on your diet, allergies, usual intake, taste preferences and budget, rather than the number of claims printed on a tub.

The source category helps narrow your options. The label determines what is actually in the product you will consume.
What “protein quality” means
Proteins supply amino acids. Nine are called essential because the body needs them from the diet. Protein quality considers more than total grams: the balance of essential amino acids and how readily the protein is digested also matter. Leucine receives attention in sports nutrition, but it is one part of the amino-acid supply required to build proteins. NIH exercise nutrition factsheet[2]
An analysis of commercially available protein isolates found meaningful differences in amino-acid composition between sources. A plant blend can combine complementary sources, but the word “blend” does not disclose the proportions or establish that a finished product has been optimised. Gorissen et al., 2018[3]
For a shopper, the practical sequence is straightforward: identify the protein sources, check the actual amount per portion, and consider the rest of the day's food. If the amino-acid profile is supplied, check whether it describes 100 g of powder, 100 g of protein or one serving. Those are different denominators.
Suppose a label lists 8 g leucine per 100 g protein. A serving containing 25 g protein would provide 2 g leucine: 8 × 25 ÷ 100. This fictional calculation illustrates label interpretation; it is not a target or a verified product profile.
You do not need to turn every meal into an amino-acid spreadsheet. More detail is useful when the diet is limited, appetite is poor or a single supplement supplies much of the day's protein. In those situations, involve a registered dietitian.
Whey concentrate versus isolate
Both terms describe dairy-derived ingredients. A shopper should compare the finished formula rather than use the ingredient name as a complete product assessment. The amount of flavouring and other ingredients, serving size, protein content and allergen information can all affect the practical choice.
If a concentrate suits your digestion and provides the amount you need, paying more for isolate is not automatically necessary. If lactose is a concern, ask for the lactose declaration of the actual product and flavour. Do not infer a lactose-free claim from the word “isolate”.
Milk allergy is a separate issue. It concerns milk proteins; removing or reducing lactose does not make whey appropriate for someone with milk allergy. Follow your allergy clinician's advice and check the complete label. NIH lactose intolerance factsheet[7]
Questions worth asking the seller
- Can I see the current nutrition panel and ingredients for this exact flavour?
- Is lactose content stated or tested, and what is the basis of any lactose-free claim?
- How many grams of powder and protein are in the recommended portion?
- Does the panel refer to the powder or the drink prepared with milk?
- Is a smaller pack or sample available so I can assess taste and texture?
An answer that simply repeats “premium”, “clean” or “advanced” does not resolve those questions.
Can plant protein support strength training?
Yes, plant-based diets can support resistance-training adaptations when appropriately planned. A separate study in young adults compared high-protein vegan and omnivorous diets during a demanding training programme and found comparable muscle growth. The vegan diet was rich in mycoprotein, so the result should not be presented as a direct test of every plant powder. Monteyne et al., 2023[4]
There are also trials of individual plant proteins. For example, a pea-versus-whey study examined muscle thickness during resistance training. Such trials are useful, but their specific participants, doses, exercise programmes and industry involvement need to be read alongside the results. A single trial is not a reason to call one ingredient universally superior. Babault et al., 2015[5]
For your own choice, ask whether you enjoy it, can afford it and can fit an appropriate portion into meals. A product you dislike so much that it sits unused is not an effective solution to a food-planning problem.
If you are new to a vegan eating pattern, protein is only one planning task. Rather than assembling isolated supplements from social-media recommendations, use the opportunity to review the entire diet. Where collagen fits and where it does not
Collagen should be judged against the question being asked. Evidence for a skin or tendon outcome cannot automatically establish evidence for muscle growth, and an amino-acid composition claim is not the same as a clinical outcome.
In a randomised study of 22 older women, whey produced greater acute and longer-term muscle-protein-synthesis responses than collagen. This was a short study with a specific population and outcome. It supports a distinction between the ingredients, not a promise about what will happen to every buyer. Oikawa et al., 2020[6]
If the immediate task is filling a protein gap in a muscle-focused diet, start with ordinary protein foods or a suitable dairy or plant option. Do not count a collagen-only serving as nutritionally identical to the same protein number from whey or soy. If you are considering collagen for another purpose, look for an article that evaluates that purpose directly, including the studied formulation, dose and limitations.
Collagen's animal source also matters to personal preference and allergy screening. Read the actual source declaration; a photograph of clear liquid or a neutral flavour does not tell you whether it is marine, bovine or another source.
A protein powder is not automatically a meal replacement
A powder may contain mostly protein with flavouring, or it may include appreciable carbohydrate, fat and other ingredients. That does not by itself establish a complete meal. Check what the product is formulated to do and consider the nutritional role of the meal being replaced.
For example, adding a measured portion to breakfast has a different purpose from replacing breakfast and lunch with powder and water. If you are regularly unable to eat meals, seek individual advice rather than assuming a high protein number makes the day nutritionally adequate.

How to compare labels without being misled
Food Standards Australia New Zealand explains that nutrition panels show average amounts per serving and per 100 g or 100 mL. Serving size can differ between businesses, so the per-100 g column is useful when comparing similar foods. FSANZ nutrition information panels[8]
Here are fictional labels to show why it matters:

Powder B has more protein in its suggested serving, but A has a higher protein concentration. Neither fact alone makes a winner. If your intended portion supplies 20 g protein, A requires 25 g powder and B approximately 28.6 g. Compare prices using those amounts.
Then check energy, carbohydrate, sugars, fat and sodium in context. A low number is not automatically better for every person's meal or activity. If the shake is mixed with milk, a plant drink or yoghurt, include those foods in your calculation.
A reusable cost calculation
Assume a fictional 900 g pack costs NZ$54 and contains 75 g protein per 100 g. The pack provides about 675 g protein. The cost per 25 g protein is 54 ÷ 675 × 25 = NZ$2.00.
This calculation allows different serving sizes to be compared fairly. It does not measure taste, protein quality, shipping costs, pack waste or allergy suitability. A fair comparison needs those facts alongside the price.
What these product labels show
These examples use retailer-supplied label images. It is not a product ranking or independent laboratory verification. Confirm that the current flavour and physical stock match the image before relying on it.

The collagen blend description gives a 60% whey concentrate and 40% bovine collagen ingredient ratio. That does not establish that 60% of its labelled protein is whey-derived: ingredient proportions and the protein contribution of each ingredient are different information. A manufacturer amino acid profile would make the comparison more useful.
Neither image establishes lactose-free status or special suitability for someone using a GLP-1 medicine. A milk-containing blend cannot be recommended for milk allergy because its marketing refers to digestion. Ask the supplier to clarify missing or inconsistent information before relying on it.
Allergens deserve a separate check
Read both the ingredient list and the allergen statement. New Zealand's Ministry for Primary Industries provides official guidance on allergen declarations, including milk and soy. Check again when changing flavours or repurchasing after a reformulation. Keep a photograph of the label and batch details if you need to discuss a reaction with a health professional. For a severe reaction, follow your emergency allergy plan and seek urgent care.
For non-allergic digestive discomfort, consider the whole preparation. The powder, liquid, portion and added ingredients may all differ from what you usually eat. Change one factor at a time where appropriate; persistent symptoms warrant health advice.
What testing claims do and do not tell you
Competitive athletes need to consider anti-doping risk. New Zealand's Sport Integrity Commission warns that contaminated supplements can lead to positive tests and that athletes remain responsible for substances found in their samples. If a seller refers to third-party testing, ask what was tested, which batch was tested, which organisation did it and whether the record is accessible. Testing for prohibited substances is a different question from verifying protein content, allergens or every possible contaminant. A logo without an identifiable record is incomplete information.

Match the choice to a real week
Consider where the product will actually be used. At home, adding an ingredient to a meal may be convenient. At work, a ready-to-mix portion might be easier. On a trip, storage and access to clean preparation equipment matter. These practical details can matter more than a small difference between nutrition panels.
Write down one ordinary week before buying a large pack: which meals are hard to organise, how often a powder would help, and whether a supermarket food could solve the same problem. This prevents purchasing several overlapping products for a gap that only appears occasionally.

Frequently asked questions
Is whey isolate always better than concentrate?
No. Compare the finished product, your needs and the cost. Isolate may fit a particular preference, but the name alone does not establish better results, no lactose or suitability for milk allergy.
Do vegans need two protein powders?
Not automatically. Start with the whole diet and a suitable protein source. Buying two tubs is not necessary merely because you eat a plant-based diet.
Is collagen vegan?
Conventional collagen peptides come from animal sources. Products marketed around “vegan collagen support” may contain other ingredients rather than collagen. Read the ingredients and assess claims separately.
Is 30 g per scoop better than 25 g?
Only if that difference serves a useful purpose in your plan. Check how much powder is in each scoop, the amino-acid source and the price per comparable portion.
Do I need added BCAAs if my powder already supplies protein?
Do not assume so from the marketing. First identify a specific nutritional need. A protein-containing diet already supplies amino acids; buying a second amino-acid product requires its own rationale.
What if I already get enough protein from food?
A powder may still be convenient sometimes, but there may be no nutritional gap to fill. You do not need a supplement merely because you have started going to the gym.
