Magnesium for sleep in New Zealand: what the evidence can actually show
Magnesium is not an established treatment for chronic insomnia. A 2021 systematic review found only three small randomised trials in 151 older adults. Sleep-onset time was shorter by about 17 minutes in the pooled estimate, while total sleep time was not significantly improved. The studies had moderate-to-high risk of bias and the evidence was low to very low quality. A supplement may be reasonable when intake is low, but persistent sleep problems deserve proper assessment.
